Our Story
The Literary Nexus was founded out of a deep love for literature and an enduring belief in its power to shape humanity.
Throughout my journey as an educator, I became convinced that literature is far more than a subject to be studied. It is a way of seeing, questioning, imagining, and understanding ourselves, others, and the world around us.
I am particularly committed to ensuring that girls and women have access to the transformative power of literature. Having taught in an all-girls school, I have witnessed how literature awakens confidence, voice, and the courage to imagine a different future.
Our Founder
Charlene Mumba is the Founder of The Literary Nexus, an initiative rooted in her conviction that literature can shape thoughtful minds, compassionate hearts, and courageous lives.
A graduate of the University of Zambia, Charlene earned a Bachelor of Arts with Education in 2006 and has since devoted her career to teaching English and Literature. She currently teaches English Literature at Munali Girls Secondary School in Lusaka, Zambia.
Nearly two decades in the classroom have shown her that literature does more than develop knowledge: it strengthens confidence, deepens empathy, sharpens critical thought, and gives young people the courage to imagine new possibilities. Her work with girls has reinforced her commitment to ensuring that girls and women encounter literature as a source of voice, intellectual freedom, and personal transformation.
Charlene founded The Literary Nexus to carry this conviction beyond the classroom. Through the institution, she seeks to bring together educators, learners, researchers, writers, and communities in advancing literature as a vital force in human development.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
"Our Manifesto
01
Literature is an expression of human dignity.
Through stories, poems, plays, and ideas, we encounter lives beyond our own. We learn to question with humility, imagine with courage, and understand with compassion. Literature reminds us that every human experience carries meaning and that every voice has the potential to enrich our shared future.
02
Progress and respect belong together.
We reject the false choice between progress and respect.
We believe that institutions can push boundaries while honouring people; that innovation and empathy belong together; and that intellectual excellence is strengthened, not weakened, by humility, inclusion, and dialogue.
03
The future is something humanity must shape.
We believe the future is not something to which humanity should simply succumb. It is something we must shape.
04
We choose participation, dialogue, dignity and hope.
The Literary Nexus exists to cultivate thoughtful minds, compassionate hearts, and courageous leaders who recognise that literature is not merely about interpreting the world: it is about preparing people to transform it.
Together, we choose participation over passivity, dialogue over division, dignity over indifference, and hope over resignation.
05
Human development is a deliberate act.
